Why is that so many linguists tend to be comfortable working only with a knowledge of one or two languages?

Is the knowledge of many foreign languages within the realm of modern linguistics actually very widespread? It seems to be a rather ironic situation, that many linguists nowadays are proficient only in English, as compared with the earlier discipline, philology, which often required a knowledge of many languages.
