Iphone 4 auto text help?

My Iphone 4 is driving me crazy. I keep typing "tge" instead of "the." Instead of auto correcting it, it just underlines it in red. Is there anyway I can get the phone to just fix it automatically? Please explain it to me in the simplest terms, I am not super technologically inclined. Thank you.
